“From Spiros Xyndas to Spiros Samaras”: The “Philharmonic Society of Corfu” officially declares the 2017 anniversaries and publishes O ypopsifios of Spiros Xyndas
The year 2017 marks for the Philharmonic Society of Corfu and for music in Greece in general, four anniversaries: the centenary since the death of Spiridon-Philiscus Samaras (1861-1917), the bicentenary since the birth of two important Greek opera composers, i.e. Spiridon Xyndas (1817-1896) and Domenikos Padovas (1817-1892), as well as the 150 years since the premiere of the opera O ypopsifios [The Parliamentary Candidate] (Corfu, 1867: music by Xyndas and libretto by Ioannis Rinopoulos), which was both the first full-scale opera in Greek and the pivotal point for the emergence of opera in the Greek language. The aforementioned anniversaries are directly connected with the Philharmonic Society of Corfu: The opera O ypopsifios was basically ordered by the Society and dedicated to the then Chairman of the Committee, the participants at the premiere, i.e. the musicians, the soloists, and the choir, were members of the Society, while the composer and the librettist were founding members of the Society. Indeed, in 1840, Spiridon Xyndas was also one of the initial founders of the Corfu Philharmonic Society, a music teacher as well, and he dedicated to it certain of his operas. Padovas also taught harmony and music theory in the Philharmonic, in 1857 he dedicated to it his opera Dirce and in 1884 onwards he was appointed the Society’s artistic director. Xyndas and Padovas were also students and close associates of Nikolaos Chalikiopoulos Mantzaros. Spyros Samaras, a student of Xyndas during his early music training, had multiple connections with the Corfu Philharmonic Society and had been its honorary artistic director since 1889. This unique occasion creates both the joy and the obligation to the Philharmonic Society of Corfu to honour in the most appropriate way these important landmarks in its history and in the history of music in modern Greece. 2017 was unanimously declared by the Committee of the Society the official year dedicated to these anniversaries. At the same time, a series of actions and events have been launched and started to be implemented, which aspire to underline the importance of them. The collaboration with the Ionian University in organising the international conference “Opera and the Greek World during Nineteenth Century” in 2017 has already been announced (17-19.11.2017). In addition, a series of anniversary speeches to be delivered by specialised researchers has already been planned, along with the exhibition of archival material relating to the composers and their works, anniversary editions of important research texts, as well as a series of concerts with works of the honorary composers from the archives of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu. From the publishing point of view, the Philharmonic Society of Corfu is particularly pleased to announce the anniversary edition of the original score –until recently considered lost– of the opera O ypopsifios. It became property of the Society two years ago, when it was donated by a fellow Corfiot citizen. It contains the entire work in piano version (voice and piano accompaniment) in the form that it was presented in 1867 and it is the only complete resource opera written by Xyndas himself. This material is rendered even more important, since it bears the signature by the librettist of the opera, Ionnis Rinopoulos, the library of whom it originated from and it does not contain any of the interventions that are visible in subsequent manuscripts. The anniversary edition of the opera O ypopsifios will be available in numbered copies. Within the next days, the process of pre-registration will be announced for those interested in this edition, which is of particular historical and artistic importance for collectors. The latter will have the opportunity to obtain this important item at a very special price. The curation of the issue has already been completed by a joint scientific team with members from the Philharmonic Society of Corfu and the Ionian University, and it has been designed so as to be an important asset for musicians, researchers, collectors, and any music lovers alike. Finally, on the occasion of the official announcement of the anniversary year 2017, the Philharmonic Society of Corfu is also pleased to announce that the orchestration information contained in the aforementioned score of the opera O ypopsifios along with corresponding elements spotted in 1999 in the archives of the Philharmonic Society Mantzaros and recently in private archives allow the full recovery of the original, and lost, orchestration of the opera. The redevelopment process is already at an advanced stage, the orchestrated excerpts of the work have already been planned to be presented in concerts in 2016, and there is also the possibility to present the opera in its original form. For the actions, the developments, and the events on the anniversary year 2017, the Philharmonic Society of Corfu will provide regular updates. |
